Business Babes | An Interview with TotallyBarbaric!

Hello everyone! I'm excited to announce that one of my favorite post topics, Business Babes will now be a regular feature on WiRL, and every Friday I'll introduce you to a wonderfully crafty and business savvy lady! This week, I have the lovely Meghan from TotallyBarbaric on Etsy! She makes beautiful, quirky, pop culture inspired needle point art. I was instantly drawn in by her use of quotes from Parks and Recreation, New Girl, Friends, and Gilmore Girls! I asked Meghan to answer a few questions about herself and her business, and she was kind enough to answer them for me. Thanks Meghan!

Shop Name:
Totally Barbaric

Tell us about yourself:

Hi! My name is Meghan and I’m a 5 year old and an 80 year old trapped in a 23 year old’s body. I spend my days watching TV, eating cookies, and embroidering. When I’m not doing any of those things, I’m probably sleeping. I can recite every line in The Parent Trap. When watching TV or movies, I can tell you the most obscure thing that actor or actress has been in at the drop of a hat. I love giving and making things for people that they wouldn’t normally think of themselves. And I’m a huge nerd.

A description of your product / materials / aesthetic:
I embroider TV/movie quotes onto fun fabrics and set them in wooden hoops. Depending on the design, I may paint the hoop a different color or add a bow to the top. I LOVE color. When I first started out, I only used white fabric. When I stepped out of my comfort zone, I stepped into the world of different color combinations and flower patterns and polka dots and stripes. This sparked so many ideas that were stuck in my brain for so long. I pay super close attention to my fabric choices, too. For example, I have a Gilmore Girls embroidery that says, “I love you a thousand yellow daisies” and the fabric has super tiny yellow daisies on it. If I can’t find a literal translation like that, I choose colors that remind me of the show or of a particular character. For my Buffy the Vampire Slayer embroidery that says “Five by Five,” I chose black and white daisy fabric that to me was super 90s, just like the show in the beginning.

When did you start your shop?

I started back in September of 2013.

What are your goals for your shop in 2014?
I’d like to expand my horizons a bit. I’ve got a few ideas in the works…embroidery necklaces, patches, and embroidery on canvas. Mainly, I just want to create more! Every week I want to add something to the shop. Lately, it’s been multiple new items every week because I’ve been extra inspired this year.

Things that most inspire you to create:
I’m most inspired by the TV shows and movies I watch. The most random scene or set decoration can spark an idea in my brain. If I try to sit down and think of designs, I usually come up flat because I’m spontaneously inspired. I keep a notebook with me at all times, because I can get ideas at the strangest times. So whenever I’m in a bit of a creative rut, I look at the notebook for some ideas. Also, brainstorming with like-minded people is the best thing you can do if you need some ideas. My sister and I have the same brain sometimes and our brainstorming sessions are amazing.

Do you have a favorite Etsy shop besides your own? Care to share?
Etsy is my favorite place to shop so this question is super hard. I love elisabethcreative, andytune, spiffingjewelry, and abirdinthehand to name a few. If you go to my etsy profile, you can check out all of the shops I love there!

Do you have any advice for anyone just starting out?

Practice, practice, practice. I know everyone says that, but it’s true! I did a lot of research before starting embroidery and made a list (I’m a huge fan of lists) of things I would need and went from there. I was really awful at first, but I got the hang of it after a while and then I couldn’t stop. Be original. Find something you love doing and put a twist on it. Don’t be like everyone else and don’t be afraid to show the world what you’re all about. Also, it’s okay to love what you make. It’s okay to show it off!

What would your ideal day be like?
I love simple days. Hanging out with my favorite people, watching a favorite show, creating new things, eating breakfast food, reading a good book, and also spending 4 entire days nerding out at Comic-Con with my best friends.

Thank you so much, Meghan!
