business babes - Jordan from Hey There Design!

Happy Friday everyone! This week, I had a conversation with Jordan from Hey There Design, a wife, mama, and a Jill-of-all-trades. She's a fellow caffeine addict with a flair for creating, an adorable heartfelt blog, and calligraphy skills like no other! I asked her about her business, and she gave me some really inspiring answers. Enjoy!

Tell us about yourself:
I'm a self-proclaimed serial hobbyist...I love trying new crafts and media out! My two main craft-loves are photography and typography though. I'm pretty addicted to coffee, but sadly can't drink it late at night. I love anything chocolate, or salted caramel. I've been married to my husband for 7 years and we met online in college, from opposite coasts! I'm pretty in love with California now (but I still have a tiny bit of my mild Southern accent left). I love my two wild animals (little boys). We are homeschooling them this year!

A description of your product / materials / aesthetic:
Quote art...I collect quotes and doodle constantly, so it seemed like a great fit! I especially love bookish or nerdy quotes, being a bit of a nerd myself. I create my art using mostly Copic markers, Micron pens and watercolors, and copious amounts of paper. I love messy, loose lettering lately.

When did you start your shop?
Two years ago, in 2012! I started out doodling quotes for fun, and doing a logo for a friend, and someone suggested I open up a shop!

What are some long term goals you have for your shop?
I would love to have more than just prints; for sure offer originals but I haven't found the best way of selling those yet. Also, I'd love to have products like coffee mugs or tote bags or t-shirts! I'm working on that! One of my goals was to occasionally run across my work on Pinterest...silly I know, but it's happened!

Things that most inspire you to create:
Hearing a good line in a song or movie, or reading it in a book...I am a lover of words. Coffee always inspires me to create, and seeing gorgeous, calm photos (think Kinfolk Magazine) always is inspiring!

Do you have a favorite Etsy shop besides your own? Care to share?
I love so many, but I always come back to Junghwa Jewelry! Amy is a sweetheart and makes amazing pieces...I own several and wear them all the time! junghwa.etsy.com

A peek inside your workspace:

Do you have any advice for anyone just starting out?
Practice a lot, stay inspired, and don't give up! Start small and really love what you do...it shows when you love what you do, and I think that really draws people to you! Also, be fully you...don't try to be what you think people want to see...just be yourself!

What would your ideal day be like?
Ideally, I'd be on a beach, or hanging out in a coffee shop, drawing all day! ;) Sadly that doesn't often happen...but my days are usually pretty darn good. :) I eat breakfast and read blogs/look at Instagram to start my day, and then get some coffee or tea going. I settle my boys down with some schoolwork or activity, and answer emails or pack up orders. After lunch, they go in their rooms for some quiet time (and an occasional nap) and that's when I get a lot of creative work done, like taking pictures for my shop, or scanning in new work. If I have logos to design, that's when I work on those. The afternoon is filled with school or projects, laundry and dishes and making dinner. And after the boys go to bed I will usually draw, read or play the piano. I'm a night owl so I have to force myself to go to bed...and I'm getting better about it! ;)

Isn't she lovely? Thanks so much Jordan!
