weekly art update #6

August 26, 2014

Since it had been a while since I'd painted, I picked up this 24x36 canvas at Michaels on a whim. I knew we needed some art to go above our sofa, but to be honest, the size of the canvas intimidated me quite a lot. I had no idea what to paint, but knew I wanted to keep it in the area of our red/blue semi-theme that we have going (I say semi-theme because it's kind of wishful thinking, nothing really matches.)

I started with the blue watery pattern that I accomplished with the help of a roller brush; like the kind you use to paint your walls. That took my Pollock-esque splashes of paint and translated them across the three feet of canvas. Then, I blended it with another one of those house-painting brushes.

Later on, I decided to paint a pink lotus. This is one of my favorite flowers, and I like the spiritual meanings implied in imagery featuring lotus flowers. There's a famous quote that equates a lotus with the human spirit. "May I live like the lotus, at ease in muddy water..."

After spending a while on the flower, I outlined it with light blue paint, and added some speckles with the darker colors to add some extra texture. I'm quite happy with the way this turned out, and being the biggest thing I've ever painted, it was also one of the quickest!

Have you painted anything lately?
What is your favorite flower?

  9. I love this ! It's so pretty!! You've inspired me to {try} to paint something for my little landing/hallway at the top of the stairs in my townhouse. It's been totally barren since we moved in this past April and every time I'm up there I try to figure out what to do with it. I think a nice big canvas (maybe watercolor?) would brighten it up nicely! Thanks! And great job on the lotus by the way :)

  10. Beautiful!!! And to be honest I also just love the blue in the background before the flower is painted on. I would buy artwork of just that blue! It's so happy and reminds me of summer, the ocean, happiness, being calm, etc.
