I'm Still Not Sure How I Feel About Taylor Swift

I'll be the first to say it, I never really liked Taylor Swift. Yes, she's a talented young lady. Yes, I think it's rad that she has won so many awards and produced so many hits. There was just always something about her that got under my skin, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Kind of like how I can't describe why I don't really like Anne Hathaway either (can you see the similarity there?)

I never exactly hated TSwift. I suppose I just tolerated her, but every once in a while when I saw her in a big poofy dress singing about how she needed a man to save her (Love Story, etc.) I just had a major eyeroll. Homegirl is a few years older than me, but seemed to always be a whiney 14 year old girl that was thirsty over at least one Jonas Brother.

Then Taylor's new album came out, and I tried to give her one more chance. She'd recently declared herself a feminist (good choice, Taylor!) and seemed to come into her own style. I flipped through some of the tracks kind of like Grace Helbig did in her 1989 Review Video. I didn't dislike it either.

I started to have an existential crisis. Did I actually like Taylor Swift? Me? Was that even possible?!

I saw the video for Shake it Off and thought it was cute, but it didn't sway me. Then her Blank Space video came out. I lost my mind. It was like Gatsby all over again. It was a parody of her previous self. She was glam and strong and just everything. A little crazy too, which always adds points in my book. She really threw herself into the performance.

Homegirl knows how to dress too. I'm really starting to need some Swiftamine.

Okay guys, I promise I'm not gonna become a Swiftie on you. I'll try to fight it for as long as I can, but if she keeps it up, I might actually have to buy into this and get some heart-shaped glasses or something. I already have the red lipstick thing covered. Dammit, Taylor.
What is your opinion on Taylor Swift?

  1. I think TSwift has had the opposite effect on me, when back in 2008 I loved her albums and country feel and find myself rolling my eyes at her recent songs (though I still listening).
And as for removing her music off Spotify & youtube, i'm a little gutted she's done it, as I haven't been able to hear any of her new songs! I guess I don't know how I feel about her doing it though!

  2. Okay, I can totally relate to this. I was really meh on her (had a spattering of her cutesy songs on my ipod that got skipped each and every time they came on) and then Red came out. And I LOVED Red. I played it over and over and over again. Then 1989 came out and Shake it off was cute but overplayed and Blank Space was the best effing song-I was kind of obsessed with it! So now I like her, and I feel like she's a guilty little secret that sometimes I'm like "Hey, I like TayTay guys, don't hate me!" lol

  3. haha, too funny. love this! ihave to say, i do love her! :)

  4. I must say, girl does crazy well.

  5. I am totally with you as well! I mean she is talented and obviously pretty smart to be able to have done what she has done but I never bought any of her albums. Until this one. I love it and listen to it more often than I care to admit. haha

  6. I'm in the same boat with you. Shake it Off came into my ears at the moment when I most needed it, and all of a sudden I realized that I LIKE Taylor Swift. Well, the most recent incarnation of her, at any rate. Her sense of humor and ability to playfully mock herself is definitely earning her points in my book. And she's pretty well spoken, too, even though she'll always seem perpetually 23 years old in my book.

  7. (also, I don't think Taylor Swift is to blame for not being able to listen to her stuff for free. She, like all of them, answers to a record label, and they're in business to make money. Seems unfair to judge her for something she has no control over.)
