Things I Can't Stand About The Blogging World

Bloggers are like birds. We flock together, and then we fight to death over the breadcrumbs.

Blogging is something I look forward to on a daily basis. I love to sit down and write posts, it feels like I'm talking with an old friend. There are a ton of really amazing people that visit this site on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, and I wouldn't trade them for the world. I've met so many awesome people and had a ton of really cool opportunities come my way. But sometimes, just sometimes, things about the blogging world can really grind my gears.

In four years of blogging, I've come across my fair share of annoyances. It is important to note, however, that the positives outweigh the negatives a million to one.

This being said, the Things I Can't Stand About The Blog World are:

-Blindly jumping on trends simply because they will bring pageviews.
Of course there's no problem using hot keywords in your posts, or for buying and showing off those shoes you love that every blogger seems to have. Your blog is your blog, and the content is up to you. BUT it's fairly easy to tell when a blogger is just to fish for pageviews, and has little to no interest in the actual topic. Stay true to yourself and your blog!

-Needing to be an expert on everything.
Some bloggers will turn anything into a tutorial. How to make a peanut butter sandwich. Why it's important to inhale, then exhale. Simple tips for walking down the street. You see, we all understand that tutorials and tips are popular, but not every post needs to be a Definitive Guide to Living The Perfect Life. The only thing you need to be an expert on is being you, and not everything has to be a teaching opportunity.

-SPONSOR ME!!!!!!
A girl's gotta eat, yeah, but cat litter reviews on a beauty blog? And you don't even have a cat? C'mon!! Stick to your niche, and your readers will be fine with you making a buck.

-Fame collecting.
It's so important to reach out to other bloggers and make blogging friends, but the purpose of blogging friends is to build each other up, not to ride on their coattails. This doesn't happen to me often, but when someone approaches me (online or at an event) and asks "how I got my followers" it sends up a big red flag. Be genuine! Get to know someone for them, not what they can offer you!

-Sometimes it's lonely!
It can be really hard to find your "friend group" in the cliquey blog world. Especially when you're first starting out. We're all really busy, and sometimes it feels like a blogger you really love totally blew off your email or your tweet. It takes a while to learn that balance, and that sometimes opportunities will pass you when you don't even realize it. I've forgotten to respond to emails before, and I'm sure bigger bloggers have an even harder time with this.

-It's SO much work!
This is both a blessing and a curse. When your work pays off, it's so awesome! It's such an awesome moment to see a post be really successful, or to get that email from that opportunity. Sometimes, however, it feels like you've been working nonstop and seeing no results. A lot of blogging seems to be the luck of the draw, or all about how you market yourself. You can write the best post ever and nobody will ever see it if you don't break your back promoting it. It's kind of hard to get used to all the "shameless self promotion" you need to do as a blogger. Then people call you self-centered. It's like sometimes you just can't win!

What drives you nuts about the blogging world?

  1. i think haters would be my blogging hate :P

  2. Great post! Totally feel you on being lonely. My best friend (in real life) also has a blog as has a TON of blogging friends. She goes on meet ups all the time. I am a bit jealous. I have wanted to meet some bloggers in person but I have been having a hard time doing so :(

  3. Hi! Stopping over from the Aloha Friday blog hop! I like this post - all valid, honest points which made for a good Friday morning read! :)

  4. The How-Tos about everything drives me nuts. Especially when it's something ridiculously simple. Great list!

  5. Great blog! Visiting from Aloha Friday!

  6. Great post and I agree with you on all of them. I prefer to see variety on blogs and I think it's important to make it your own. It's can get a little annoying to see the same thing on every other blog just because it's in at the moment. I think it's better to be different and just yourself that way you'll be more interesting and hopefully your followers will increase. The tutorial thing makes me laugh a little, because I've seen a very well known you tuber post a tutorial on you tuber on how to make a cheese toast! I shall say no more.

  7. So true. The bottom line is stay genuine and stick to your niche because readers can see straight through the B.S.

  8. Yes to all of this! I especially agree with the "Needing to be an expert on everything"... I can't seem to find a blog these days that doesn't just give out blog tips. It's really taking away from the original reason we all started blogging- just to have fun and to be ourselves!

  9. Hi Jess! I agree with all of your point above about the blogging world. The worst trait I have is being forgetful about replying to emails or returning comments. I just followed you on GFC via the Aloha blog hop..happy cohosting :) I'd love for you to stop by and say hello sometime --->

  10. Oh girrrrl, I feel you. It can be tough. It frustrates me when someone new just jumps right in to the blogging world and takes over like they've put so much time and effort in but in reality they have barely started.

You're right it takes A LOT of work and sometimes it feels people just post what everyone else is posting and loving and it's the worst!

Blogging is a tough hobby, but it is so fun and creative and lovely if you just go with it! I feel sad when I see people so desperately trying to become famous bloggers over night! It just aint gonna happen!

Love this post. Your blog is one of my favourites
