Tips to Get the Most out of Your Old Clothes

We've all got one, that pile of unwanted clothes sitting in the back of our closets, just waiting to be hauled off to the thrift store once we sort through the rest of our houses and reorganize everything after who knows how long.

I adore thrift stores, but there are a few steps you should make before taking a trip to the local Goodwill, if you want to get a little more bang for your buck with your old threads.

First off, take them to a consignment store.
If you have a ton of clothes, sort through them a bit to find any brand name items that stores like Plato's Closet, Buffalo Exchange, or another "we buy clothes" location nearby. These don't have to be the most expensive things, I've had many a Forever21 top picked up by the folks at Plato's. Keep in mind, these stores usually shop in-season, so your winter coats aren't something they want to see in the middle of August.

Got high-end items? Put 'em on eBay!
That purse you saved up for a few years ago, but have since changed your mind about? Put it on eBay! That dress you loved but it's the wrong color for you? List it! Making some money back is always a good feeling!

DIY it!
If you've got a crafty side, you might be able to turn that old flannel into a pillow, make a quilt from scraps of those chenille sweaters, dip dye that old stained shirt? Don't forget the ever trendy cut-off shorts! Put your Pinterest skills to the test! There's a good chance you could turn something old into something awesome, and you might not even need a sewing machine.

Go to a Swap Meet!
Every few months I go to a swap meet in my area, and I always end up with some great clothes, and it's fun to see what people end up picking of mine! I found my swap meet on a the Meetup website, so look there if you haven't heard of any local to you!

or... swap with a few friends!
If you have a big group of friends, belong to a club, or just want to trade with your bestie, set up a little clothing swap of your own. That way, you get to pick your friend's wardrobes and they finally get their hands on that thing of yours they've always liked. It's a win win!

Finally, take them to the thrift store.
Be sure to go in and take a peek at the stuff inside. You might just get lucky and find something awesome!

  1. These are some cool ideas. I have heard of Buffalo Exchange before but i never knew what it did (I don't think we have anything even similar in Australia) but what a cool idea.
I am so guilty for having a huge pile in the back of my closet of 'I'll donate when I work through everything else' and a huge pile of 'needs altering or mending' (that I will never do)

  2. I really need to go through my closet and make a trip to Plato's Closet and Goodwill! I wanted to go to the meetup with you guys but I will be in Florida that weekend :( I might be able to go to the next one though!
