DIY Abstract Gravity Painting

A few months ago I decided that I wanted to make a big monochromatic painting to hang over my bed, because I thought it would look really cool and modern, especially since I'm trying to update my space to add more texture and unique, handmade elements. I saw a video in which an artist poured color after color onto a surface to make a beautiful, minimalistic, and abstract piece. You can find that video here.

Since I'm not a "professional artist" I decided that I wanted to do something a little more simple and involving less resources (aka I wanted it to be much cheaper and quicker than what the artist in the video made) so I simplified the concept, grabbed my supplies, and got to work.

As for the supplies, all you need are:
  • canvas or other surface you'd like to beautify
  • acrylic paint
  • something to thin the paint (I used acrylic gloss medium and a little water. Be careful not to use too much water)
  • utensils to mix the paint with the thinner
  • small plastic cups to pour the paint (optional)
  • a sheet and some paper to cover the floor
  • acrylic sealer spray to coat the painting once dry

Once you set up, the rest is really up to you. Your choice of colors, placement of the paint, and patterns you want to create make the possibilities endless. No matter what you choose, you'll end up with a fun and unique piece!

After pouring your paint, pick up the canvas and move it slowly so gravity takes control of the paint, making super cool designs. If you're not happy with the way it turns out the first time, add more paint! There is no "wrong" way to fluid paint.

Experiment using different sized canvases, different color combinations, and a wide array of paint placement patterns. I found that I preferred using fewer colors with larger surface areas, as it produced more of a dramatic effect, but it's all up to your personal preferences!

This is my final product! It took a few tries to get the painting the way I wanted, but now that it's finished, I really love it!

What colors would you use in a painting like this?
